Foods That Help You Detoxify Your Body

Using the body’s natural detoxification system is the way we stay healthy, and eating foods that support it. The body is equipped to eliminate harmful toxins from the body when given the proper nutrients. There are many foods that help to promote detoxification in the body. Here are some foods that help you detoxify your body.

Cruciferous Vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, kale, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and broccoli help to support the body’s natural detoxification. They help to neutralize and remove toxins from the body, this gives you more energy, improves overall health, and reduced risk of diseases. Cruciferous vegetables have many nutrients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fatty acids.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants protect the cells from free radicals. Oxidative stress is a result of excessive free radical production. A diet rich in antioxidants help to counter oxidative stress caused by free radicals and other toxins that increase the risk for disease. Antioxidant rich foods include vitamin A, vitamin C, Vitamin E, selenium, lycopene, lutein, and zeaxanthin.

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, grapefruit, and limes, help the body detoxify through the liver and kidneys. Vitamin C can help remove toxins from the body. Citrus fruits help the liver produce the detoxifying enzymes that help eliminate toxins.

Berries

Berries like blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries contain powerful antioxidants that help to fight the damage from free radicals. They help to increase blood flow to the kidneys, helping to remove toxins. Berries are a good source of fiber. Fiber rich foods help keep things moving through the digestive tract.

Melatonin

Melatonin is known as the sleep hormone, it also helps the body to detoxify by fighting free radicals, which can reduce macromolecular damage in organs. It can detoxify by stimulating antioxidant enzymes and by suppressing pro-oxidant enzymes. Melatonin supports the brain’s detoxification system during sleep.

Green Tea

Green tea is high in antioxidants that benefit the liver. It contains catechins, plant-based antioxidants that improve liver function. Green tea can support the liver by turning toxins in the blood into waste that is eliminated by the body. The polyphenols in green tea can protect the liver and prevent cell damage, increasing liver enzymes to improve detoxification.

Prebiotics

Prebiotics are important for gut health, they are a fiber that feeds the good bacteria in the gut called probiotics. Prebiotics help the good bacteria to produce nutrients like short-chain fatty acids. Eating foods rich in prebiotics can keep the immune and detoxification systems healthy. Foods that are rich in prebiotics include tomatoes, artichokes, bananas, asparagus, onions, garlic, and oats.
