The Best Sunscreens Without White Cast

We all know the importance of wearing sunscreen, that shouldn’t mean having to deal with a sunscreen that leaves an unsightly white cast on the skin. Most sunscreens out there leave behind a white residue, even some that claim not to. Thankfully there are some that actually won’t leave a white cast, are lightweight, moisturizing, and waterproof.

What causes a white cast from sunscreen?

There are two types of sunscreens: mineral and chemical. Chemical sunscreens absorb the UV rays, turning them to heat, and then releasing them. Mineral sunscreens sit on the surface of the skin acting as a physical barrier to reflect the sun. The ingredients are made of minerals like zinc and titanium oxides, these are white-colored minerals. This is why mineral sunscreens give you the white cast.

Mineral sunscreens are usually better for sensitive skin types and hyperpigmentation. There have been advancements in how mineral sunscreens are formulated. There are some mineral sunscreen formulas that have a more transparent consistency that disappear ones rubbed in. If you choose to go with a mineral sunscreen make sure the formula is a clear or sheer coverage. Chemical sunscreens don’t reflect light so you don’t get a white cast.

Once you have decided between a chemical or mineral sunscreen you need to make sure it has a SPF 30 or more. This is the minimum requirement in order for sunscreen to be effective according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Also make sure your sunscreen is broad spectrum, this means it protects you from UVB rays and UVA rays. This protects you from cancer-causing sunburns, sun spots and skin damage.
