Estrogen Dominance-What It Is and How To Avoid It

What Estrogen Dominance Is

Estrogen is a hormone produced by the ovaries, adrenal glands, and fat tissue. Estrogen has many roles in the overall health of the body. These Include insulin activity, bone health, cardiovascular health, nervous system functions, fertility, and immune system functions.

Estrogen levels fluctuate during the menstrual cycle, it’s when the parameters surpass healthy levels that estrogen dominance occurs. Estrogen dominance is when the body produces more estrogen than other sex hormones. This can show up in the body as weight gain, fatigue, breast cancer, and infertility.

There are two types of estrogen dominance: Frank estrogen dominance- when the body produces too much estrogen. Relative estrogen dominance-when the body doesn’t produce sufficient progesterone and estrogen levels are higher.

How To Avoid Estrogen Dominance

Research has shown that diet and lifestyle can impact estrogen levels. Healthy diets including plant based and the Mediterranean diet are fiber-rich diets that help maintain healthy estrogen levels. A fiber-rich diet can reduce estrogen levels in the body by excretion of hormones from the body.

Foods to avoid for estrogen dominance are red meat, processed food, refined carbs, and saturated fats. These foods can increase the risk of disease in the body.

Gut health also plays an important role in avoiding estrogen dominance. There are specific bacteria in the gut that metabolize and eliminate estrogen from the body. When the gut is out of balance estrogen is reabsorbed into the body that can cause estrogen dominance.

Managing stress is important to maintain healthy estrogen levels. This is because the stress hormone cortisol is made in part by progesterone causing your estrogen levels to increase.

Supplements

There are supplements that research has show to help reduce estrogen levels in the body. Supplements like DIM( Diindolylmethane) help lower estrogen. This is found in vegetables including, cabbage, broccoli, kale, and brussels sprouts. DIM has been shown to regulate estrogen and may protect against certain types of cancers.
